Family Owned Business Raises Funds to Treat Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress
New York, NY (September 26, 2013) – The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund announced it has received $265,000 in donations from Motor Home Specialist to support the construction of nine National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) Satellite Centers at military bases around the country, designed to provide new hope for returning service members coping with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS).
Beginning in July, Motor Home Specialist, located in Alvarado, TX, announced a promotion, pledging $1000 of every new RV sale would be donated to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF). After selling 108 RV’s in the month of July, the company extended the promotion to run through the end of The World’s RV Show, a highly anticipated trade show for recreational vehicles, hosted by Motor Home Specialist in September. When the show came to a conclusion on September 14th, Motor Home Specialist had sold 265 RV’s through the promotion.
“We are extremely honored to make this donation on behalf of Motor Home Specialist and thank our loyal customers who helped make this possible,” said Donny O’Banion, CEO of Motor Home Specialist. “Donating to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund was an overwhelmingly positive experience for our family and our team. We are incredibly proud to do our part in supporting our nation’s service members.”
Founded in 1996 by Doug O’Banion, Motor Home Specialist currently employs three generations of the family, and is now co-owned by Doug and his four sons including SFC Patrick O’Banion who served in the US Army for 22 years before returning to the family business. SFC O’Banion joined the Army in 1985, and has served on multiple deployments throughout the world. He served during two major conflicts, completing a tour in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and a tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“As I have said before I believe the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund to be the most veteran friendly organization in the country with almost all of the proceeds raised going to those who deserve our unyielding thanks and to the families of those fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said SFC Patrick O’Banion, part owner of Motor Home Specialist. “Our family business has always been a proud supporter of our service members and with this donation of $265,000 we hope to continue to express our gratitude for the brave men and women who wear the uniform of our country.”
The World’s RV Show is held at Motor Home Specialist twice per year. The 2013 fall show featured over 700 new 2014 model motor homes for sale.
“We are extremely grateful to Motor Home Specialist and its customers for supporting Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund,” said David Winters, President of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. “Members of our armed forces – like SFC Patrick O’Banion – deserve the very best from us. Thanks to businesses like Motor Home Specialist, we will be able to provide thousands of service members across the country, coping with the effects of traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, with the treatment they need and deserve.”
The funds raised by Motor Home Specialist will support Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund’s $100 million campaign to fund the construction of nine state-of-the-art NICoE Satellite Centers, located at military bases and medical centers around the country. The first of these centers opened on September 11th at Ft. Belvoir in Virginia, and the second is scheduled to open in October at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. A third center is currently under construction at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, and will open in 2014. Each center is designed to diagnose and treat TBI and PTS for service members without having to separate them from their units or leave their families for extended periods of treatment. This proximity to family and friends is expected to enhance their care and rehabilitation.
The design and mission of the Satellite Centers are based on the original NICoE, opened in 2010 at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Operated by the Department of Defense, NICoE is the most advanced facility of its kind in the country, and is the center of the Armed Forces’ efforts in researching, diagnosing and treating TBI, PTS and related injuries sustained by military personnel. Hundreds of American Service Members have received some form of diagnosis or treatment from NICoE in the last two years.
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is also currently engaged in a social media campaign, #MakeItVisible, which encourages all Americans to lend support to the NICoE Satellite Center Effort, and to learn about the invisible wounds of war, specifically Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress.
