The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is launching an important new effort that will provide critical help to American service members who are returning from combat suffering the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress (PTS) and related afflictions. It is estimated that as many as 625,000 returning servicemembers are suffering from TBI or PTS today, with over 60% failing to be properly diagnosed. They need our help now.
Last June we launched an effort to address this crucial need. We will build a series of centers, at military bases around the country, dedicated to diagnosing and treating our heroes in uniform suffering the effects of TBI and PTS. These centers will serve as satellites to the central National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), which we opened in Bethesda in 2010 and which has successfully treated hundreds of troops. Each new NICoE Satellite Center will be able to treat 1,000 or more troops every year, and data from the centers will be transmitted back to NICoE and aid its ongoing research program, helping to improve detection, diagnosis and treatment.
To build these crucially-needed centers, our new campaign must raise $100 million. Donors like you have already contributed close to $30 million, which has allowed us to begin building the first two centers, at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, both of which will open later this year. But we need to raise another $70 million to build the remaining centers.
TBI and PTS can have devastating effects on our veterans: affecting their ability to work, interact with others, manage basic living tasks, and even interact with their own families. Military suicide rates soared in 2012 to nearly one per day – this is due in large part to complications from TBI or PTS. These injuries have been referred to as the Invisible Wound of War, but now you can help us to make it visible and save countless lives.
How can YOU help?
On March 5 we will launch a significant social media movement to address this critical need facing our heroes in uniform and their families. Our goal is to spread awareness far and wide. You have generously supported our efforts in the past, and we hope you will now help us spread the word about this new mission. Your participation will not take long, but through these small tasks we can together make a big difference. We ask that you take just a few minutes out of your day to:
1. Tweet on Twitter about our effort. Sample tweets below.
