Each May is designated as Military Appreciation Month, but that doesn’t mean that your appreciation has to begin on May 1 and end on May 31. Military appreciation should be a year-round mission for all! Sometimes even the smallest actions can significantly impact the lives of service members, both current and past. Here are a few ways to show your military appreciation all year round.
Write to a service member
There are a number of organizations that help facilitate letter-writing campaigns for our deployed service members. Organizations like A Million Thanks have sent millions of letters to grateful recipients. It’s a great way to involve friends, family, and help kids of all ages develop an understanding of appreciation for the service of our military!
Write to a veteran
Military appreciation and letter writing doesn’t just extend to active duty troops, it can include those who have served their country in the past too. From a “thank you for your service” to an “I’m thinking of you,” a little bit can go a long way.
Lend a hand
Something as simple as an offer to run errands or pick up groceries or prescriptions for an aging veteran or a service member who has difficulty leaving the house can make a major impact. Offer a ride to a doctor’s appointment or a walk around the block. You’ll never know the kind of difference a simple task might make until you offer!
Fly the flag
What better way to show your military appreciation than to let Old Glory fly in your yard? It’s a symbol of everything our military heroes are fighting to protect when they enlist and serve our country. If you do choose to fly the American flag, be sure to brush up on your flag etiquette!
Support their recovery
Everyday our military service members put their safety on the line for their country. For those who return suffering the effects of the invisible wounds of war: traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, it can be a difficult transition.
