Memorial Day is a day to honor the brave men and women who have given their lives to protect the country they love. Memorial Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1971, but was previously referred to as Decoration Day. However, the modern practice began in 1968 by Major General John A. Logan. He was the Commander in Chief for the Grand Army of the Republic at the time that he dedicated a day to decorate war graves in commemoration of those lost. Many believe that May 30 was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country, making the decoration all the more beautiful. Because many companies close in observance of Memorial Day, it has also become a day that people enjoy spending outside enjoying the company of friends and families. Below we share some ideas for doing both!
1. Cook out with Friends and Family.
After taking a moment to remember those fallen, on a nice sunny day having a BBQ is one of the most popular ways to celebrate!
2. Watch the National Memorial Day Parade.
Taking place in our nation’s capital, the National Memorial Day Parade is certainly a site to see! If you’re in the Washington, D.C. area, we recommend getting there early to get a good seat. If not, the entire parade will be live-streamed on military.com.
3. Go to the Beach.
Go out and spend the day with your loved ones soaking up the sun while flying the stars and stripes! Enjoy that freedom!
4. Take a Fishing trip.
Many states have their “free fishing days” during Memorial Day weekend, where anyone can fish without a license! Be sure to check your state’s regulations before you pack your tackle box, but fishing can be a great way to spend time with your family and reflect on what this holiday truly stands for.
5. Send a care package to those currently serving.
Whether you have served, or know someone who has, you can imagine how uplifting a care package can be. Send some essentials, as well as fun, personal items! You can send things such as: Footballs, DVDs, books, headphones, board games, or even workout gear!
Have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend everyone! Share your Memorial Day activities with us on Facebook!
